A few months ago in March (2019) I shared about my unexpected health journey. It was a confession and contemplation of both a Registered Dietitian and patient walking through the challenges of health problems and therapeutic diets. I wasn’t myself. I hadn’t felt myself for months. The mood swings and emotional breakdowns are what made it the worse.
Some may have just chalked it up to postpartum depression. I don’t think that is what it was. I wasn’t sad all the time. Just a lot. I actually could be very happy. Then, like a switch was flipped, a fatigue, bloat and moody, cloudy blackness would descend. After a few hours (worse case, days), it would lift like a switch had been flipped. You can read the full post HEREbut needless to say, I didn’t feel like myself.
In March I was on the beginning of healing. I promised my readers updates as to my progress. Here is the latest…I am happy to say that I am feeling like myself again.
Yes, “hello…its me again.”
The old Cathryn is back. Words don’t begin to describe my gratitude to the Lord for how He has helped me!!!
Likely it was a whole host of things that played into my healing and recovery including weaning my daughter, one round of supplements to kill pathogenic bacteria and another round to improve gut health and inoculate my gut with beneficial bacteria.
The only negative part of this new season in my health journey has been the seven pound weight gain I experienced. It could be the change or hormones or the dramatic shifts I had to make in diet. Maybe now I am absorbing more nutrients and don’t need to eat as much? Perhaps it is all of those. On a small, 5 foot frame such as mine, seven pounds are difficult to hide. However, I guess I would rather be a little bigger and FEEL better than smaller and feel horrible. I’ll take the trade.
Killing the Bad guys & and Promoting the guys
I mentioned that I was one some supplements to kill pathogenic bacteria. My functional endocrinologist put me on Dysbiocide (2 pills 2x/day) and FC-Cidal (1 pill 2x/day) to kill any pathogenic bacteria. (I got those through Biotics Research Northwest. Note that there IS a difference between Biotics REserh and the Northwest branch).
In addition o the supplements I was also on a Low FODMAP Diet (8 weeks) and the Elimination diet (4-6 weeks).
When I first started these supplements I felt HORRIBLE. After two weeks of negative symptoms I almost quit. Seriously. It was BAD! Then I called the supplement company and discovered that I was supposed to take the pills WITH food! Opps, I had been taking them on an empty stomach. It made ALL the difference!!!! I was able to continue and complete the 12 week protocol.
Currently I am in the rebuilding process.
I am taking supplements by Microbioime Labs. I took theirMega sporebioticfor a short time years ago and now I sell it on my website. I am very careful with the products I endorse so I don't take offering a product on my website lightly. However, I have seen the research, read the reviews by Practitioners on the effect it had on their patients and now personally benefited from it in a huge way!
I decided to spend the next three months really rebuilding my gut. The first month I took the Mega Prebiotic and Mega Mucosa in addition to the Mega Sporebiotic (probiotic). For the next two months (I am still in the middle of that) I will continue just he Mega Sporebiotic.
Better Than Before
It is actually not just that “Cathryn is back,” it is as though a NEW Cathryn is here! Since finishing the diets, SIBO supplements and especially since beginning the probiotics I feel BETTER than before! I am praising the Lord for His kindness in all this!
Foods that normally caused me trouble are no longer problematic. ( I can eat beans, a food I avoided for YEARS!) My energy is great. My moods are more stable. The persistent bloat and black-log is a rare-ity. That is HUGE! Those nasty food cravings that have been my companion for years, gone. I never thought that would happen. Ever!!!! I am able to enjoy my husband, toddler, relationships and life with greater ease and less difficulty.
I still have a bit going on. I recently underwent a minor surgery with some medication aimed at helping me heal. It probably won’t be till Fall until we see how everything shakes out.
I think that is sort of life though, ya know? It is never just one straight line but a series of ups and downs to differing degrees. Sometimes the “up” or the “down” is a little bit more than before but it is still a wave that you need to ride. Just ride the wave.
Only by God’s grace and mercy can this be done. I want to take the things I have learned from this HARDseason and trust God more and serve others with the unique nutrition experiences I have had.
The other day I realized I was fearing potential changes ahead when I stopped myself. What did God just bring your though Cathyrn?” I chided. Is he not good and perfect in all that He has done? Will he change now?
No. He will not. "You (God) are good and You do good" (psalm 119: 68). Always. Even in the hard.
So I press forward with thanksgiving, joy, diligence and new health.
